Nurse Manager Reflective Practice
Nursing & Midwifery Service
Hunter New England Local Health District
Kate trained in Northern Ireland as a Registered Sick Children’s Nurse, General Nurse & Geriatric Nurse and came to Australia in 1979. Kate has been in a variety of nursing roles in her fifty year career, mainly working in Palliative & End of Life Care.
Kate developed an interest in communication skills in nursing and especially in developing education for nurses in how to be ‘present’ and compassionate when working with patients and families in Palliative & End of Life Care. She recognised the importance of reflective practice for all those working in this field and has been a Reflective Clinical Supervisor for many years.
Kate has utilised her integrity and advocacy skills to gently challenge the ‘norm’ and her ‘Celtic’ background facilitates the “I’m curious and wondering” approach to the patients, families, and staff – everyone has a story.
Kate often reflects that there is often little she can do to support staff in relation to rosters and lack of staff, but what she can do, is provide a soft cushion for staff to lean into and feel heard, acknowledged, and supported.
