Enhancing Palliative Care Services in Rural Australia

Claire Marshall1

Abstract:

This plenary explores the inequities experienced by rural Australians with palliative care needs, and presents an evidence-informed set of elements necessary for improving access to high-quality palliative care across rural settings. Drawing on findings from four interconnected studies—including a systematic review of rural palliative care models, a meta-synthesis of consumer perspectives, an international policy environmental scan, and qualitative interviews with rural leaders—this presentation illuminates factors that shape rural care, while also highlighting the strengths, innovation, and resilience embedded within rural communities. By integrating quantitative, qualitative, and policy evidence, the session identifies key enablers and proposes a flexible set of elements that can be adapted across diverse contexts. Grounded in the voices of patients, families, clinicians, and system leaders, this plenary aims to shift understanding, inspire hope, and equip delegates with practical, evidence-based strategies to advance equity and enhance palliative care delivery for the one-third of Australians who call rural communities home
